Mushroom Substrates
What Is a Mushroom Substrate?
A mushroom substrate is the material used to grow mushrooms. It provides the essential nutrients and environment needed for the mycelium to thrive and produce fruiting bodies. Typical substrates include straw, sawdust, coffee grounds, coco coir, Vermiculite, bran, sugarcane mulch, soy hulls, and other agricultural waste, such as hemp hurd. Sometimes a combination of these is used as they may not be suitable to be used alone by themselves.
What Makes a Good Mushroom Substrate?
A good substrate for mushrooms should have a balanced combination of carbon, nitrogen, minerals, moisture, and structure.
-
Nutrient Content: The ideal substrate should contain about 1-2% nitrogen. Additional nutrients like magnesium, potassium, and calcium may be required, depending on the type of substrate.
-
pH Level: The substrate should have a pH of 5-6.5, although some mushrooms, like oyster mushrooms, can tolerate a pH of up to 8. Most substrates are prepared to be PH neutral at around 7.
-
Moisture Content: The moisture content should be between 50-70%, ensuring the substrate remains hydrated but not soaking wet. The correct moisture content in a substrate is referred to as field capacity.
-
Airflow: The substrate should have a good structure, allowing for proper air exchange to encourage mycelial growth. If the substrate is too fine, it will compact and prevent air exchange; a very airy substrate can take much longer to colonise, balance is essential.
Preparing Substrate
Before inoculating the substrate with mushroom spawn, it must be prepared to ensure optimal growth.
-
Water and Nutrient Amendment: Water is added, and sometimes extra nutrients are incorporated to reach the desired balance for fungal growth.
-
Pasteurisation or Sterilisation: This is crucial to eliminate any competing organisms, such as mould or bacteria, that could hinder mushroom growth.
