Can also be used for Plant tissue culture.
For food:
Standard gel is 1 teaspoon of agar agar per cup of liquid, ranging from half a teaspoon for a soft, wobbly texture up to two teaspoons for a hard, crisp set. Gel strength varies between suppliers, so with a new supplier always check and note the exact ratio you’ve used, as it won’t match other suppliers. Rootlab’s agar is high strength, so use towards the lower end of whatever a recipe calls for.
This agar is completely food grade. We often get customers calling a second time just to confirm this, since we’re a mycology and plant tissue site. If you call us, we’ll tell you the same thing, it is 100% food grade and safe to use for food.
For mycology:
To make 500 ml of liquid for filling agar Petri dishes, use 10 grams of agar agar powder along with sugars and nutrients of your choice.
For plant tissue culture:
Solidifying agents like agar play a vital role in tissue culture media, supporting optimal plant growth and development. They also help distribute nutrients, hormones and other key elements evenly throughout the culture medium.
Add 6 to 10 grams (depending on the density you want) of agar and other ingredients to 1000 ml of water. Adjust to a pH of around 5.4 to 5.8, then autoclave at 15 psi, 121°C for 20 minutes.
Storage: keep in a cool, dry place away from moisture.
